The district administrations of Panipat, Sonepat, and Rohtak have announced the closure of primary classes (up to fifth standard) in all schools - government, semi-government, and private - starting November 18. The decision comes as air quality continues to deteriorate across these regions, prompting authorities to prioritize children's health and safety.
Alarming Air Quality Measurements
Sonepat has emerged as a particular concern, with its air quality remaining in the 'very poor' category for over a week. The district recorded an AQI of 350, with PM 2.5 levels reaching 439 and PM10 at 451, placing these pollutants in the severe category. Panipat also reported worrying numbers with an AQI of 302 and PM 2.5 levels at 331.
Strict Enforcement and Alternative Measures
District officials have mandated online classes as an alternative to physical attendance. The HSPCB has demonstrated its commitment to enforcing GRAP guidelines by imposing a significant fine on the National Highways Authority of India for violations during underpass construction at Baghola village on NH-19. This strict approach signals authorities' determination to combat air pollution through enforcement measures.
