A complex and sensitive case involving a transgender former student of Ashoka University has drawn attention after her family alleged “indoctrination” and approached authorities seeking her whereabouts.
The Haryana State Commission for Women has now directed police in Rohtak and Sonepat to produce the woman before it, as concerns over her safety and autonomy continue to unfold.
Family Raises Serious Allegations
The parents, both academicians, claim they have not met their child for over two years. They allege that:
- Their daughter’s behaviour changed during her time at the university
- She was influenced by certain individuals, including activists and faculty
- The university administration allegedly helped her evade contact when police first traced her
- They have demanded a deeper probe, even suggesting investigation by central agencies.
Woman’s Stand: Chose to Leave Home
However, the woman — who is an adult — has consistently maintained a different version:
- She told police she left home due to alleged parental abuse
- She stated clearly she does not wish to return
- She asserted her right to live independently
Her position was also recorded before the court, after which the case was closed. Later, she approached the Delhi High Court seeking protection of her personal liberty. The court allowed her to live at a place of her choice.
Commission Seeks Clarity, Not Coercion
At a recent hearing, Commission Chairperson Renu Bhatia clarified that:
- The woman will not be forced to meet her parents
- The objective is to verify her well-being and living conditions
The Commission has insisted on her physical appearance, rejecting the suggestion of a virtual appearance.
University Responds
Ashoka University has denied all allegations, stating:
- The individual was a student from 2019 to 2023
- She left home in October 2023 to live independently
- The university has no knowledge of her current location
Officials did not comment on specific allegations regarding “indoctrination.”
Larger Debate: Autonomy vs Parental Concern
This case sits at the intersection of:
- Individual autonomy and identity rights
- Parental concern and emotional distress
- Institutional accountability
Legally, as an adult, the woman has the right to choose her life. At the same time, the family’s concerns have brought the matter into public and institutional scrutiny.
What Happens Next
The focus now shifts to:
- Whether the woman appears before the Commission
- What her current condition and circumstances are
- Whether any further legal or administrative action is warranted
