Central government has announced plans to construct a 750-kilometer greenfield expressway which will connect Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh to Panipat in Haryana. This project will strengthen road connectivity across 22 districts of Haryana and Uttar Pradesh and reduce travel time significantly between economic centers.
Project Overview and Route Details
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has selected a Delhi-based ICT firm as the project consultant. This firm will be responsible for creating the Detailed Project Report (DPR) and establishing the land boundaries required for the expressway's construction.
The expressway will begin in Gorakhpur and extend all the way to the industrial hub of Panipat in Haryana. Initially, the project was limited to connecting Gorakhpur with Shamli, but it has now been expanded to reach Panipat.
The route will pass through numerous districts including Gorakhpur, Sant Kabir Nagar, Siddharthnagar, Balrampur, Bahraich, Lucknow, Sitapur, Shahjahanpur, Hardoi, Badaun, Rampur, Moradabad, Bareilly, Sambhal, Bijnor, Amroha, Meerut, Saharanpur, Muzaffarnagar, and Shamli in Uttar Pradesh before entering Haryana and terminating at Panipat.
Expected Benefits and Impact
Once completed, the expressway will significantly reduce travel times across northern India. For example, the journey from Gorakhpur to Haridwar will be cut down to approximately 8 hours, making pilgrimages and business travel much more efficient.
The project is expected to bring significant economic benefits to the regions it connects. By linking Panipat's industrial zones with eastern UP, the expressway will facilitate faster movement of goods and raw materials. Farmers in the agricultural belts of UP will gain better access to markets in Haryana and beyond. Improved connectivity to religious and tourist destinations like Gorakhpur and Haridwar will stimulate the tourism economy.
Implementation Timeline
According to senior NHAI officials, the project will be completed in multiple phases. The Delhi-based ICT firm will not only assess the costs but also help select contractors for construction. The tender process for construction work will begin after the completion of the DPR.
The selected construction firms will be required to complete the Gorakhpur-Panipat Expressway within a timeline of 3 years from the commencement of work, making this one of the fastest-implemented infrastructure projects in the region.
