In a strong response to mounting farmer complaints, Haryana's caretaker Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini took decisive action today to address issues in the state's paddy procurement process. Visiting several grain markets, Saini promised farmers timely lifting of their produce and fair prices, while also cracking down on officials responsible for delays and irregularities.
CM's Market Tour and Promises
Saini toured grain markets in Babain, Pipli, and Ladwa, personally inspecting the quality and moisture content of paddy. During his visits, he engaged directly with farmers and commission agents, assuring them that all grain meeting quality standards would be procured at the minimum support price (MSP).
"No stock with 17 percent or less moisture content should remain unsold," Saini firmly stated. "The entire crop must be purchased, lifted, and payments cleared on time. We will take action against anyone imposing illegal cuts."
The CM promised that lifting of farmer stocks would begin on Saturday, with sufficient gunny bags made available to facilitate the process.
Addressing Farmer Concerns
Farmers at the markets voiced their frustrations about produce lying unsold for up to eight days and unfair deductions despite meeting moisture content requirements. Saini responded by instructing officials to streamline the procurement process and warning of strict consequences for any misconduct.
"We are closely monitoring grain markets," Saini explained. "Discussions have been held with rice millers to ensure timely lifting. If local millers don't lift the stock, we'll bring in millers from other areas to help."
Procurement Progress and Official Action
The Chief Minister reported that about 5.25 lakh metric tonnes (MT) of paddy had already been procured in Haryana, with 1.59 lakh MT lifted. Additionally, 1.31 lakh MT of bajra had been purchased.
In a clear signal of his commitment to addressing irregularities, Saini announced the suspension of two officials for negligence in paddy procurement at the Ladwa grain market. HAFED's manager/inspector Kuldeep Jangra and Food and Civil Supplies Inspector Sandeep Ahlawat faced immediate action for their roles in the procurement delays.
Political Context
While focusing on agricultural issues, Saini also touched on the political landscape, accusing the opposition Congress party of corruption and nepotism. "The people of Haryana see through the Congress' intentions," he claimed. "Despite their false narratives, people have chosen the BJP with a clear mandate."
As the paddy procurement season continues, all eyes will be on the Haryana government's ability to deliver on its promises of fair, efficient, and timely crop purchases. The Haryana Story will continue to monitor developments and bring updates on this crucial issue for the state's farming community.
