In a significant move just before the Haryana state assembly elections, the cabinet has given its nod to a 10% reservation for the Backward Classes (B) category. This decision comes amidst the implementation of the Model Code of Conduct in the state.
Reservation Details and Process
Chief Minister Nayab Saini, after an informal cabinet meeting, announced that the BC (B) report has been accepted by the cabinet. The commission's report will now be sent to the Election Commission of India (ECI) for approval. Saini emphasized that there would be no changes to the existing 20% quota for Scheduled Castes in the state.
The Chief Minister stated, "The Supreme Court has analyzed the commission's report. We have also analyzed the Other Scheduled Castes and Deprived Scheduled Castes categories." He added that the commission has recommended a 10% quota for Deprived Scheduled Castes, which the cabinet has accepted after thorough analysis of all data.
Election Code and Future Steps
Due to the Model Code of Conduct in place, further action on this matter will only take place after the Haryana Assembly elections. The state government has formed a high-level committee to review proposals falling under the purview of the code of conduct. This committee will also consult with the Election Commission in special circumstances.
Extension Lecturers' Demands
Saini mentioned that the cabinet also discussed the demands of extension lecturers earning less than 50,000 rupees. A letter regarding their demands will be sent to the Election Commission for consideration.
BJP's Confidence in Upcoming Elections
The Chief Minister expressed confidence in the BJP's prospects for the upcoming elections. He stated, "BJP is fully prepared for the Haryana Assembly elections. We will form the government with a majority for the third time in Haryana." Voting is scheduled for October 1, with results to be announced on October 4.
Support for Vinesh Phogat
Addressing the recent controversy surrounding wrestler Vinesh Phogat, Saini assured, "We will not let there be any shortage in Vinesh's honor. Vinesh is Haryana's daughter, and we are proud of her." As Haryana heads towards a crucial election, this reservation decision could play a significant role in shaping voter sentiment. The state now awaits the Election Commission's response to this pre-poll announcement.
