Haryana's Sports Minister Sandeep Singh has announced a significant reward for Olympic bronze medalist Sarbajot Singh. The shooter from Ambala, who won a bronze medal in the mixed shooting event at the Paris Olympics 2024, will receive ₹2.5 crore and a government job. This announcement came during the minister's visit to Sarbajot's home in Ambala on Wednesday.
Rewards for Olympic Success
Minister Sandeep Singh stated that Sarbajot would receive benefits according to the state's sports policy. He praised Sarbajot's parents for their time and financial support, which helped their son bring honor to the entire country. The minister also facilitated a phone call between Sarbajot's father, Jatinder Singh, and Chief Minister Nayab Saini, who congratulated the family on their son's achievement.
Uncertainty Over Manu Bhaker's Reward
While Sarbajot's reward has been announced, there's still no word on the reward for Manu Bhaker from Jhajjar. Bhaker made history by winning two bronze medals in a single Olympics - one in the individual event and another in the mixed event with Sarbajot. According to Haryana's sports policy, a bronze medalist receives ₹2.5 crore. However, it's unclear whether Bhaker will receive ₹2.5 crore or ₹5 crore for her two medals.
From Humble Beginnings to Olympic Glory
Sarbajot Singh comes from a modest family in Dheen village, Ambala. His father, Jatinder Singh, is a farmer, and his mother, Hardeep Kaur, is a homemaker. Sarbajot studied at DAV College, Chandigarh, and practiced at a rented shooting range before his Olympic success. Interestingly, Sarbajot initially wanted to be a footballer but switched to shooting after seeing children use air guns at a summer camp in 2014.
A Rising Star in Shooting
At just 22 years old, Sarbajot has already won 13 medals in his shooting career. His achievements include gold medals in the ISSF World Cup, World Championships, and Asian Championships. He has been a two-time national champion and has consistently performed well in junior and senior competitions.
This announcement by the Haryana government not only recognizes Sarbajot's achievement but also aims to inspire more young athletes from the state to pursue sports. As India celebrates its Olympic success, the focus now shifts to how other states and the central government will honor these young champions who have made the nation proud on the global stage.
