In a significant development, the Haryana Cabinet has proposed doubling the job reservation quota for Agniveers, graduates of the central government's short-term military recruitment scheme. The suggestion to increase the quota from 5% to 10% came during a recent Cabinet meeting, highlighting the state's commitment to supporting those who serve in the armed forces.

The initial proposal, which suggested a 5% reservation in government jobs across Groups A, B, C, and D, was met with a push for enhancement by the ministers present. They argued that a 10% quota would better align with the central government's reservation policy for Agniveers upon completion of their four-year tenure.

Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, who chaired the meeting, opened the floor for deliberations after one minister raised concerns about the last-minute tabling of the reservation proposal. This led to a productive discussion where ministers offered their suggestions for improvement.

"Our primary goal is to ensure that no Agniveer faces unemployment after completing their four-year stint under the scheme. We are fully committed to absorbing everyone by implementing this job reservation," a minister stated, emphasizing the government's dedication to the cause.

The proposal aims to grant horizontal reservation to Agniveers across government jobs within existing quotas but under a new category. However, the Cabinet unanimously agreed that increasing the job quota would be the best approach to accommodate these military service graduates.

While the discussion was largely constructive, it also highlighted the need for better preparation and communication within the government. One minister suggested that prior information about such significant proposals would allow for more thorough consideration and analysis.

The state government is now working on incorporating the various suggestions into a revised proposal. It is expected to be presented as an agenda item at the next Cabinet meeting, provided the necessary modifications are completed in time.

This move builds upon a promise made by former Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar in June 2022, who had assured government jobs to Agniveers after their term ends. The current administration's efforts demonstrate a continued commitment to this pledge.

As Haryana takes steps to support Agniveers, the decision is likely to impact a significant number of families in the state. The increased quota, if approved, could provide a substantial boost to employment opportunities for those who choose to serve in the military through the Agnipath scheme.

The coming weeks will be crucial as the government refines its proposal and prepares to present it for final approval. The outcome of this decision could set a precedent for other states and potentially influence national policy on post-service employment for Agniveers.
