In a significant move to support education and ease the financial burden on families, the Haryana government has announced an expansion of its free bus travel scheme for students. Chief Minister Nayab Saini's administration has increased the free travel distance from 60 kilometers to 150 kilometers for all students using state roadways buses. This decision comes as part of a series of student-friendly initiatives ahead of the upcoming state assembly elections.

Extended Travel Benefits for All Students

Under the new policy, students in Haryana can now enjoy free travel up to 150 kilometers on state roadways buses. This is a substantial increase from the previous limit of 60 kilometers. Transport Minister Aseem Goel announced that these passes will be issued on a six-monthly basis, ensuring that students can benefit from this scheme throughout their academic year. This extension is expected to significantly reduce transportation costs for students, especially those who travel long distances to attend educational institutions. It's a move that could potentially increase access to better educational facilities for students from rural and semi-urban areas.

Special Provisions for High Achievers

In addition to the general extension, the government has introduced a special provision for high-performing students. Students who score 60% or above in their 10th and 12th-grade examinations will be eligible for the 'Happy Card'. This card allows them to travel up to 500 kilometers free of charge on Haryana Roadways buses for an entire year.

This initiative is not limited to government school students; private school students are also eligible, provided they meet the academic criteria. Importantly, there is no income limit for families to avail of this benefit, making it accessible to a wide range of students across the state.

Improving School Infrastructure

Alongside the transportation benefits, the Haryana government is also focusing on improving school infrastructure. Education Minister Seema Trikha, during her inspection of schools in Panchkula, announced plans to increase the number of buses in schools where there is a shortage. This commitment comes in the wake of a recent school bus accident, highlighting the government's responsiveness to safety concerns.

The Minister's visit to schools, including one in Dhatokda village in Kalka, involved interactions with students and administrative officials. These visits are part of the government's efforts to assess and improve the overall educational environment in the state. The 'Happy Card' scheme, initially introduced for families living below the poverty line, allows all family members to travel 1000 km annually for free on government buses. This scheme is available for families with an annual income below 1.80 lakh rupees, with a nominal registration fee of 50 rupees.

These initiatives by the Haryana government represent a comprehensive approach to supporting education in the state. By addressing transportation costs, which can be a significant barrier to education for many families, and simultaneously working on improving school infrastructure, the government aims to create a more conducive environment for learning and educational growth.

As the state moves closer to assembly elections, these student-friendly policies are likely to be a key talking point. The government's focus on education and student welfare could potentially influence voter sentiment, especially among young voters and families with school-going children.
