An unusual and disturbing incident surfaced in Haryana’s Kurukshetra after a young man’s body remained lying near a canal for nearly four hours while police personnel argued over jurisdiction.
According to reports, the body of a youth was spotted in the Narwana Branch canal of the Bhakra system. Divers were called to the spot and managed to pull the body to the canal bank within minutes. After recovering the body, the divers informed the emergency helpline.
Soon after, police teams from the Kurukshetra University Police Station and the Jyotisar Police Post reached the spot. However, instead of immediately taking custody of the body, personnel from the two units reportedly began arguing over which jurisdiction the incident fell under.
Due to the dispute, the body remained tied with a rope on the canal bank for several hours. Even the ambulance that had arrived at the scene reportedly returned after waiting for a long time.
Seeing the situation, diver Pragat Singh and his team attempted to transport the body themselves on a motorcycle towards the Superintendent of Police’s office. Only after this did police officials intervene and take the body into custody. During the search, police recovered a medical slip from Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Hospital from the youth’s pocket. The slip helped identify the victim as Sandeep Kumar from Ramgarh Village.
Police officials said there were no visible injury marks on the body during the initial examination. Investigators are yet to determine whether the youth accidentally fell into the canal or died by suicide.
The body has been kept in the mortuary of LNJP Hospital, and a post-mortem examination will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death. Police added that preliminary information suggests the deceased had been mentally distressed and lived alone.
