In a landmark decision, a special CBI court in Haryana's Panchkula has handed down the ultimate punishment of death to four men for their roles in the horrifying 2016 Nuh gangrape and double murder case. This brutal crime, which took place in Dingerheri village of Nuh district, left the nation stunned and outraged, prompting widespread calls for justice to be served.

The Court's Verdict: Death for the Convicts

Calling it one of the "rarest of rare" cases, Additional District and Sessions Judge Rajeev Goyal sentenced Hemat Chouhan (30), Ayan Chauhan (24), Vinay (36), and Jai Bhagwan (31) to death. The judge also imposed a combined fine of Rs 8.20 lakh on them. In his order, the judge stated that the extremely serious nature of the crimes committed by the convicts left no room for leniency, and the severest punishment was warranted.

The Horrific Crime: A Night of Terror

On the night of August 24-25, 2016, a group of 4-5 men entered the house of a farmer in Dingerheri village. They were armed with sticks, iron rods, and a pistol. They viciously attacked the family members, hitting them with the weapons. The farmer and his wife were brutally killed in this assault, while four other family members suffered severe injuries.

But the horror did not end there. In an act of unimaginable cruelty, the men gang-raped a 21-year-old woman and a 16-year-old minor girl from the same family. They also robbed the family of cash and jewellery before fleeing the scene.

The Judge's Strong Words: "Like Monsters"

In his order, Judge Goyal used strong language to condemn the actions of the convicts. He stated that they "acted like monsters" and showed no mercy to anyone, including the young girls they subjected to the horrific crime of gang rape. The judge highlighted that the gang rape became even more traumatic for the victims as it happened in front of their family members.

The Path to Justice: Demands for a Fair Investigation

Initially, the Haryana government had set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the local police to probe the case. However, there were growing demands for a CBI investigation from various quarters, including a Rajya Sabha MP and a human rights activist. Despite the then Chief Minister dismissing the crime as a "small issue," the mounting pressure eventually led to the case being transferred to the CBI in December 2016. On April 10, the special CBI court convicted the four men for double murder, gang rape, and robbery, while acquitting six others accused in the case.

A Deterrent and a Message of Hope

Judge Goyal's decision to award the death penalty sends a strong message that such heinous crimes will not be tolerated in society. It serves as a deterrent, warning potential offenders of the severe consequences they will face for committing such acts.

The verdict also offers a glimmer of hope to victims and their families, reassuring them that justice, though delayed, will ultimately prevail. It reminds us of the need to address the root causes of such crimes and work towards creating a society where respect for human life and dignity is paramount.

As the nation continues to grapple with the shocking details of this case, it is a call to action for all citizens to stand united against violence and work towards creating a safer and more just world for everyone, especially the most vulnerable.
