One of the most shocking and tragic incidents that have come to light is from Kurukshetra, where stray dogs attacked a large flock of sheep, resulting in over 50 sheep being killed.

The incident was witnessed in Jhansa area in Kurukshetra late at night near a government hospital. According to reports, 10-12 stray dogs attacked the flock of sheep, resulting in 25 sheep being killed instantly. In the chaos that followed, another 25–30 sheep panicked and jumped into the nearby Sutlej-Yamuna Link Canal (SYL canal), where they were swept away.

Attack Happened Twice During the Night

The shepherd, Kuldeep, a resident of Salpani Kalan, said he had purchased around 70 sheep on loan nearly 10 months ago. On the night of the incident, he and his companions had halted near the canal with over 300 sheep after grazing them in nearby villages.

Around 2 am, a group of dogs first approached the flock but was driven away. However, almost 30 minutes later, the dogs returned when the caretakers had fallen asleep and made a second, unexpected attack.

]Panic Led to Massive Loss

The unexpected attack created confusion among the sheep. While some were killed by the dogs, others, out of fear, ran towards the canal and fell into the water.

Shockingly, it was noticed that the dogs did not eat the sheep but killed them and left, which is a sign of aggressive behavior.

Morning Revealed Devastation

Early in the morning, the shepherds woke up to find a horrifying scene, with dead sheep scattered all over and some near the canal. Some were missing, believed to have been swept away by the water.

Fortunately, no human casualties were reported.

Financial Blow to Shepherd

Kuldeep estimated the total loss at around ₹5 lakh. He said he had taken loans to buy the sheep, and the incident has pushed his family into financial distress. Local residents claim that the stray dogs in the area have become increasingly aggressive as they feed on carcasses dumped nearby.

The affected shepherd has now appealed to the administration for compensation and immediate action to control the stray dog menace in the region.
