Two people were burnt alive in a horrific early-morning accident on the Kundli–Manesar–Palwal Expressway, once again raising serious questions over safety on the busy highway.
The incident occurred on Sunday near Sabaras and Gudhi villages under the Mohammedpur Ahir police station in Tauru subdivision of Nuh. According to preliminary police findings, one vehicle allegedly applied sudden brakes, triggering a chain collision involving at least five vehicles.
During the collision, a dumper carrying stone chips and a container vehicle caught fire within seconds. The flames quickly engulfed both vehicles, leaving the driver and helper trapped inside. They were burnt alive on the spot. Due to severe charring, the identities of the deceased could not be established immediately.
The massive fire caused panic among commuters and brought traffic on the expressway to a complete halt. Thick plumes of smoke covered the highway, leading to a traffic jam stretching several kilometres. Three fire tenders were pressed into service and it took nearly two hours to douse the blaze. Police and highway authorities worked for more than three hours to remove the wreckage and restore traffic movement.
Officials said the expressway remained partially closed for several hours, causing major inconvenience to motorists. A crane was deployed to clear the damaged vehicles from the road.
The Station House Officer of Mohammedpur Ahir police station said a preliminary investigation suggests abrupt braking as the main cause of the crash. Efforts are underway to identify the deceased and trace the ownership of the burnt vehicles. Police said legal action would be initiated once formal complaints are received.
The deadly accident has once again spotlighted concerns over speeding, poor lane discipline and inadequate safety enforcement on the KMP Expressway, which has witnessed several fatal crashes in recent years.
