An incident at a wedding function in the Mewat district turned ugly when a minor molested a stage dancer, resulting in a brawl and a video of it surfacing on social media sites. This is the second incident of a female dancer being molested in a span of one month in the region.
This incident occurred during a wedding function in the village of Palla. A huge gathering had been accumulated at the venue. Popular dancer Asmeena was performing on the stage when a youth reportedly tried to play mischief with her. In order to avoid this situation, the dancer had to climb a wall and flee the venue.
Following the incident, some of the men who were present at the function mobilized and beat up the accused with sticks. This happened in the presence of police, though this is yet to be confirmed. The video of the scuffle has since gone viral, sparking widespread discussion and outrage. Adding to the prominence of the event, Indian Idol fame singer Salman Ali was also performing at the wedding, which had drawn an unusually large audience.
This is not an isolated incident. On November 16, a similar case of molestation involving a female dancer was reported during a pre-wedding programme in Pachgaon village of Tauru subdivision. That incident too was caught on camera and went viral, attracting national attention.
In the previous case, when the dancers, who were allegedly molested, assaulted, and eventually boycotted, reported the incidents to the police, community and religious leaders intervened and brokered a compromise between the two sides. No police case was formally registered, but a commitment was allegedly made about providing security for the dancers at a later event.
In the current situation, no formal press release has yet been given out by the police, and the name of the suspect is yet to be confirmed. Moreover, whether any case has been filed yet or not is also not clear.
The recent incidents have again brought to light some grave concerns regarding women’s safety, law enforcement, and accountability in public gatherings in and around Mewat.
