In one significant move to bring about justice and rehabilitation, the Haryana government announced a major relief measure for the families affected by the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, saying it had decided to give government jobs to eligible dependants of Sikh families who lost their relatives during the violence. This finally brought recognition and support to the victims who have struggled for decades.
It aimed to provide dignity, financial security, and rehabilitation to these families who suffered irreparable loss during the riots. In this regard, the Deputy Commissioner’s Office in Rewari has issued an appeal to all residents of the district who were directly affected by the 1984 riots and lost a family member during that period.
As per the district administration, the eligible families would need to submit the entire details of the applicants by December 18, stating that all the documents are true, through official email ID of Deputy Commissioner’s Office, Rewari. The list will be compiled and then forwarded to the state government to start the process of imparting government jobs.
The authorities clarified that this data collection drive is being done solely to identify legitimate beneficiaries and is meant to ensure that the government gets correct and verified information. Affected individuals or their families are mandated to provide their name, address, contact details, a brief account of how their family got affected by riots, and any available documents related to the killing of the victim. Even though the documentation is little, the families were invited in for the submission of whatever they could gather, so that verification in a transparent manner takes place.
The administration has described the process as time-bound, hence any information received thereafter is not considered, which makes the matter urgent for the eligible families. The authorities have urged the residents to ensure that no deserving family is left out in this exercise merely on account of delay or ignorance.
This decision of the Haryana government is being widely viewed as a humane and corrective step toward addressing the historical injustice faced by Sikh families since 1984. Beyond employment, the move holds symbolic importance, as it recognizes the suffering of innocent citizens and renews the state's responsibility toward their rehabilitation. The district administration has said it was committed to helping the families in every step of the process, and appealed for maximum participation so that 'all sections' get due justice under the scheme.
