Four people died while five others were injured in an accident when a speeding truck rammed into three vehicles near Gharaunda on National Highway 44 Wednesday morning. The impact of the accident was devastating as it left vehicles mangled and caused panic among the passengers on this busy highway route.

The Accident Sequence

The incident occurred around 9 am when the truck, which was going towards Gharaunda, lost control and veered into the opposite lane after crossing the divider. The out-of-control vehicle first hit a Punjab Roadways bus that was on its way from Delhi to Amritsar and caused a commotion among the passengers in it. With the momentum, the truck then hit a motorcycle before it dragged a car underneath its wheels. The car was completely mangled while the truck overturned near the railing of the service lane. Two passengers each were traveling by car and motorcycle. The Gharaunda police are yet to identify the victims.

Eyewitness Account

Jagdish, an eyewitness who was travelling from Panipat to Karnal, narrated the horrific scene. "The truck suddenly crossed the divider. After entering the Panipat-Karnal carriageway, it first hit the Punjab Roadways bus, triggering panic among passengers and injuring them," he said.

It was a terrifying scene to see, according to witnesses, with people screaming for any help as wreckage settled. The impact had left behind a trail of twisted metal and devastation, testimony of its force.

Rescue and Investigation

The Gharaunda SHO, Inspector Deepak, along with a police team, immediately reached the spot and admitted the injured to hospital for treatment. The rescue teams encountered obstacles while pulling out the victims: they extracted the truck driver by breaking the windshield, and two passengers were still inside the mangled car as the teams cut the vehicle to reach them.

The bodies have been sent to Kalpana Chawla Government Medical College for post-mortem examination. Police have initiated an inquiry into the causes of accident, though the extent of damage clearly indicates that overspeeding was a major factor.

"We are investigating the reasons behind the accident," confirmed the SHO, though a preliminary assessment points to excessive speed as the primary cause of the driver losing control. The accident has brought to light the trouble of speeding on National Highway 44, a key artery that connects Delhi with northern states. It sees heavy movement of traffic, and such accidents are not only dangerous but tend to result in multiple vehicle pile-ups.
