Ambala Cantonment police took extraordinary action Thursday, arresting five men who harassed a girl and assaulted her family, shaving their heads and parading them through markets after Cabinet Minister Anil Vij ordered strict action. The accused were made to hold their ears and publicly promise never to harass women again.
The Incident
Five young men harassed a girl in Ambala Cantonment. When the victim's family went to the accused's homes to complain, the men attacked them with bricks, injuring the girl and her relatives. The family then approached Cabinet Minister Anil Vij with their complaint.
Vij, who is renowned for his strict enforcement of the law, gave the police strict instructions to deal with the accused right away. His quick intervention prompted an immediate police response, earning him the nickname "Gabbar" in this context.
Public Penalties
All five of the accused were taken into custody and subjected to unusual punishment by police as per the minister's orders. In an effort to discourage similar behavior, officers publicly humiliated the men by shaving their heads before parading them through neighborhood marketplaces. During the parade, the accused were made to hold their ears—a traditional gesture of apology and submission—while promising they would never harass any girl again or even look at women inappropriately. "We will not harass any girl after today, nor will we ever look at anyone," they pledged publicly.
Controversial Methods
While the police action brought immediate relief to the victim's family, the methods employed raise questions about due process and appropriate law enforcement responses.Despite their dramatic nature, public humiliation penalties fall into a legal limbo when it comes to their suitability in contemporary law enforcement.
The incident illustrates conflicts between concerns about upholding appropriate legal procedures and calls for prompt, visible justice in harassment cases. However, authorities obviously felt extraordinary given the severity of the brick attack on the victim's family.
