In a shocking incident in Panipat, an unusual on-the-spot punishment was meted out when a Thar driver who crushed five puppies to death was caught and handed over to the police. The entire incident was recorded on the CCTV cameras.
The Incident
The incident happened on November 14 in Khatu Shyam temple lane of Kaptan Nagar area. The driver, Vinod from Jagannath Vihar, was driving the Thar vehicle and had crossed a tractor before attempting to avoid a car parked ahead.
While taking care to avoid the stationary vehicle, Vinod did not notice five puppies that were lying to the left of the road. The wheel of his vehicle ran over all the five puppies. All five died instantaneously. Bystanders who witnessed the incident shouted to stop him, but he continued driving.
Community Response
Local people immediately called the police and reported the incident. The entire incident was clearly recorded in the CCTV cameras, and so the community people caught the driver and handed him to the police.
Unique Punishment
Instead of approaching a court of law, the police meted out instant and unusual punishment at the police station itself. The driver will have to feed rotis to all street dogs in that locality for one month. He is also supposed to personally take care of the mother dog which lost its five puppies.
Driver's Apology
In a written apology to police, Vinod stated he was focused on avoiding the parked car and really hadn't seen the puppies on the roadside. He admitted the wheel of his vehicle ran over them, killing all five. This creative sentencing reflects the growing awareness about animal welfare while making sure the offender makes amends directly to the affected animal community.
