In a shocking development, Haryana Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) YS Poonan allegedly shot himself dead at his residence in Sector 11, Chandigarh, late Monday evening. His wife, IAS officer Amneet P. Kumar, is currently on an official tour to Japan with Chief Minister Nayab Saini. The incident has sent shockwaves across the state’s administrative and police circles.
Police officials confirmed that an investigation is underway, and the forensic team has collected evidence from the spot. The motive behind the suicide is yet to be established. “We are examining all aspects, including professional and personal reasons. No suicide note has been recovered so far,” an officer said.
Senior-most rank with top salary and perks
The rank of ADGP is one of the highest posts I the Indian Police Service (IPS) with heavy responsibility and authority. According to the 7th Pay Commission, the basic salary for an ADGP is approximately ₹2,05,400, which may differ slightly based on service length and grade. Apart from the basic pay, officers are awarded some allowances such as Dearness Allowance (DA), House Rent Allowance (HRA), and Travel and Vehicle Allowances. They also get official residences, government cars, and medical treatment under the Central Government Health Scheme.
Even with this economic security and professional standing, YS Poonan's untimely demise raised concerning issues of mental health and stress among top officials in highly stressful posts.
Investigation underway
Authorities have ruled out foul play for now. A police officer said, “We are awaiting the return of his wife, IAS Amneet P. Kumar, for further statements. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination at PGIMER, Chandigarh.”
The state government has expressed grief over the incident. Senior officials from both the Haryana Police and Civil Services visited the ADGP’s residence following the tragedy. The shocking suicide of a high-ranking officer with a stable career and strong family background underscores the urgent need for psychological support systems within administrative and police services.
