The Central Bureau of Investigation team has arrived in Bhiwani to take charge of the highly controversial Manisha murder case, marking a significant development in Haryana's most talked-about criminal investigation. Loharu police will hand over all investigation reports and evidence collected so far to the federal agency.
The CBI team had been in contact with Manisha's family for the past four days, with officials calling her father Sanjay twice to confirm their arrival.
The case gained widespread attention after the 25-year-old lady teacher disappeared from her home on August 11, only to be found dead in agricultural fields near Singhani village on August 13. The scandal escalated when local police branded it a suicide case on August 18, producing a suicide note as proof. Manisha's family, however, totally refuted the finding, claiming murder and seeking a proper inquiry.
Their round-the-clock protests, in support of villagers, finally compelled authorities to hand the case over to CBI on August 26. The battle for justice by the family went all the way to the top when they visited Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini at his Chandigarh home on September 2.
In the meeting, CM Saini promised them a transparent and impartial investigation, saying, "Manisha was our daughter, and no effort will be spared in ensuring justice for her."
The Chief Minister assured that there would be a special officer watching the CBI probe, reiterating the government's determination to find the truth. The case has turned into a litmus test for the criminal justice system of the state and its reaction to popular pressure for accountability.
