In a touching tribute to livestock excellence, Haryana farmer Ishwar Singh performed the traditional 'Jeevan Yagya' ceremony to honor his old Murrah buffalo Dhanno, celebrating her extraordinary 25-year journey as a champion dairy animal.
Dhanno, also referred to as "Black Beauty," rose to fame in the cattle breeding industry in India after winning Rs 40 lakh in prizes in both national and state contests. She won eight times in the 'Best Animal of the Show' category in Haryana, Punjab, Delhi, and Rajasthan for her outstanding milk production, which peaked at 26 liters per day during competitions.
The buffalo's achievements reached national recognition when Prime Minister Narendra Modi honored her at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute in Delhi in 2016. Singh purchased Dhanno from Kaithal district's Ramana Ramani village in 2008 for Rs 2.01 lakh, and she immediately proved her worth by winning Rs 31,000 at her first cattle fair. Singh's family became extremely wealthy as a result of Dhanno's breeding success.
During her lifetime, she gave birth to 18 calves, and the offspring sold for a premium price of between Rs 10 and Rs 18 lakh. Others were pre-booked prior to birth, but her most valuable calf sold for Rs 18.31 lakh at first calving.
Indian farmers' strong emotional ties to their livestock are reflected in the 'Jeevan Yagya' ceremony, which is customarily held for people who make extraordinary contributions to their families or society. The community has a long history of keeping premium Murrah buffaloes, as noted by village sarpanch Om Prakash, who mentioned that one animal sold for a national record Rs 25 lakh in 2013.
