Jind Couple Celebrates Daughter's Birth After 19 Years of Marriage With Grand Feast

Surendra and Krishna Host Feast for 21 Villages for Daughter 'Bhumi' After Multiple Miscarriages, Setting Example of Gender Equality in Haryana

Mother Krishna

Sometimes the most beautiful stories come from the simplest acts of love. In Thua village of Jind district, a couple has shown everyone what real happiness looks like when they celebrated their daughter's birth like never seen before.

Surendra works as deputy head of Kaliraman Khap. He married Krishna from Jheel village on June 9, 2006. But their journey to parenthood was not easy at all. For years, they kept hoping for a child but nothing happened. Krishna got pregnant many times, but each time she lost the baby within a few months. Doctors said her blood type made it very difficult to carry a pregnancy.

Krishna went through this heartbreak more than 10 times. Each time they hoped this would be the one, but it never worked out. The doctors told them chances of having their own child were very slim. Five years back, Surendra decided to adopt his brother's son so they could experience being parents.

Krishna eventually gave birth to a healthy baby girl after 19 arduous years of marriage. For Surendra and Krishna, it seemed as though everything had changed when they gave her the name Bhumi.

An Unusual Party

Surendra chose to do something that no one in the neighborhood had ever seen before rather than celebrate in private at home. He invited people from 21 different villages around Thua Tapa to a huge feast that he had planned. He even invited every khap in the state.

Everything was present at the celebration: mouthwatering food, lively dancing, and DJ music. People from all over the village came to bless little Bhumi and join the happy family in celebrating.

"I don't think there should be any difference between how we celebrate sons and daughters," Surendra said with a big smile. "When a daughter is born, we should be just as happy as when a son is born. This is the message I want to give to everyone."

What People Are Saying

The entire village was amazed by what Surendra did. Old people said they had never seen such a grand celebration for a girl child in their lifetime. Young parents said this gave them a new way to think about daughters.

"This is the first time we've seen someone throw such a big party for a daughter's birth," said one villager. "It really makes you think about how we should treat our daughters."

Surendra's celebration is making people in rural Haryana talk about changing old-fashioned thinking about girls. His simple act of joy is helping others see that daughters are just as precious as sons.
