The state government has announced an ambitious plan to give free electricity to more than 2 lakh families through solar power. This will happen under the PM Surya Ghar scheme, where solar panels will be installed on house rooftops across the state.
The government wants to complete this massive project by 2026-27. But that's not all - they also plan to make every government building in Haryana solar-powered by December 31, 2025, without taking any help from central government funds.
Chief Secretary Anurag Rastogi shared this exciting news during a state-level coordination committee meeting in Chandigarh on Thursday. He said the government wants to ensure solar power reaches every family, especially in rural areas where people need it most.
So far, the state has already installed 30,631 rooftop solar systems, showing good progress towards the bigger goal. The government has surveyed 4,523 government buildings that can generate about 122 megawatts of solar power capacity.
First Solar Village Sets Example
Kaithal district's Balu village has become Haryana's first model solar village, setting an example for others. Similar selection processes are ongoing in Karnal and Kurukshetra districts. Under the model solar village program, one village in each district will be developed as a complete solar-powered community.
Villages with more than 5,000 people can get Rs 1 crore in central financial assistance. These model villages will have solar street lights, home lighting systems, solar water systems, and solar pumps, creating a self-sufficient clean energy ecosystem that works 24/7.
Easy Financial Support for Families
The best part is that families don't have to worry about the high cost of installing solar panels. The central government provides financial help directly to people's bank accounts within 15 days of approval. Additionally, Haryana government is giving extra state financial assistance to 1 lakh Antyodaya families on a first-come-first-serve basis. This double subsidy makes it much cheaper for poor families to install solar systems in their homes. The government wants to make sure that even families with limited income can benefit from free solar electricity.
Help Available Everywhere
To make the process smooth and help people easily, the state electricity boards have created an online portal and set up more than 280 dedicated help desks in sub-divisions across Haryana. These help desks will guide families through the application process and solve any problems they might face.
This solar power initiative will not only give families free electricity but also help protect the environment by reducing pollution from traditional power sources.
