MP Subhash Barala's Son Vikas Still Missing from New Government Job

Vikas Barala Gets Assistant Advocate-General Post But Fails to Report for Duty at Haryana AG Office in Delhi Despite Week-Long Wait

Vikas Barala

Vikas Barala, son of Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament Subhash Barala, has still not joined his new job as Assistant Advocate-General (AAG) in Haryana's Delhi office. This comes nearly one week after his name appeared in the official appointment list released on July 18.

What's the Current Situation?

Sources close to the Advocate-General's office say Vikas Barala has not reported for duty yet. A senior law officer confirmed that there has been no communication about his joining. "His name was in the July 18 list, but we haven't heard anything about him starting work," said the officer.

When reporters tried to contact both Subhash Barala and Haryana Advocate-General Pravindra Singh Chauhan, neither responded to phone calls or messages asking for clarification.

Background of the Stalking Case

Vikas Barala's appointment comes eight years after he was involved in a serious stalking case. In August 2017, he and his friend Ashish Kumar were charged with stalking Varnika Kundu, daughter of a senior Haryana government officer. The incident happened in Chandigarh, and the case is still pending in a Chandigarh court.

During the legal proceedings, Vikas was kept in Burail jail in Chandigarh. Even while in police custody, he was allowed to take his criminology exam as he was completing his law degree from Kurukshetra University. He is currently out on bail.

How Did He Get This Job?

The appointment process followed proper government rules. A screening committee with two retired High Court judges recommended Vikas for the position. The Home Secretary officially issued the appointment order on July 18.

Along with Vikas, five other lawyers were also appointed as law officers for Haryana's legal team in Delhi. In total, more than 95 law officers got appointments in different positions like Assistant Advocates-General, Deputy Advocates-General, and Additional Advocates-General.

Legal Requirements for the Job

The government had advertised these positions in January 2025. According to the Haryana Law Officers (Engagement) Act of 2016, candidates must go through proper screening by a selection committee. The committee looks at various professional skills, including how many cases the lawyer has handled.

Importantly, job applicants must declare if any police case (FIR) has been filed against them and whether they have been convicted of any crime. However, the 2016 law only stops people from getting these jobs if they have been convicted of crimes involving "moral turpitude" - meaning serious moral wrongdoing.

Since Vikas Barala has not been convicted yet (his case is still in court), he was legally eligible for the position. The screening committee found him suitable based on his qualifications and experience.

The delay in joining duty raises questions about whether there are any behind-the-scenes issues or if Vikas is simply taking time to wrap up his current commitments before starting the new role.
