The Haryana government has launched an innovative environmental conservation program that provides annual financial assistance of Rs 3,000 to caretakers of trees aged 75 years or older. This initiative, known as the 'Pran Vayu Devta Yojana', represents a significant step toward preserving the state's aging tree population.
The scheme operates on principles similar to senior citizen pension programs. Trees that have completed 75 years of age qualify for annual financial support, which helps cover essential maintenance expenses such as fertilizers, soil enhancement, and general care requirements.
Karnal district has emerged as a notable example of the program's implementation. According to Forest Officer Pawan Sharma, 112 trees in the district have already been registered and are receiving pension benefits. An additional 55 trees have been identified and will soon be included in the program. Statewide, approximately 4,000 trees have been identified as eligible for this financial assistance.
The program addresses a critical environmental concern where many heritage trees were deteriorating due to inadequate maintenance resources. Previously, tree owners often faced financial constraints in providing proper care, leading to the death or removal of these valuable environmental assets.
Lalit Kumar, a resident of Pundrak village in Karnal, exemplifies the program's beneficiaries. He maintains a 78-year-old mango tree originally planted by his grandmother. The tree has been cared for by three generations of his family, and they now receive annual pension support for its maintenance. Kumar regularly provides fertilizers, ensures proper watering, and conducts necessary soil treatment.
The scheme was introduced during the tenure of former Chief Minister of Haryana and current Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar. Forest department officials report that the initiative has generated increased public interest in tree plantation and conservation activities.
The program ensures that heritage trees receive adequate care while encouraging communities to value their environmental resources. This approach combines practical financial support with long-term environmental preservation goals.
