Four policemen from Gurugram's Sector 18 police station have been arrested on extortion charges after a street vendor gathered evidence against them using hidden camera footage. The officers were produced in court and sent to judicial custody following their arrest on Thursday.
The case came to light when Gulab Singh Sahu, a migrant from Bihar's Darbhanga district who operates a small paratha, tea, and cigarette cart, approached Police Commissioner Vikas Kumar Arora with video evidence and bank deposit slips documenting months of systematic extortion.
According to Sahu's complaint, Head Constable Rajbir initially demanded Rs 5,000 weekly, threatening to shut down his business and confiscating his merchandise. Soon after, Constable Ajay Kumar and Special Police Officer (SPO) Anil joined in, extracting between Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 weekly. Assistant Sub-Inspector Bijendra Kumar allegedly collected Rs 10,000 monthly from the vendor, whom he had known for several years. "I was desperate after months of harassment," Sahu explained in his complaint. "I installed a hidden camera in my hut to record their visits when they came to collect money."
Taking immediate action on the vendor's evidence, Commissioner Arora suspended all four officers and initiated a departmental inquiry. In a significant move demonstrating zero tolerance for corruption, the Police Commissioner also suspended the Station House Officer (SHO) for failing to supervise his subordinates properly. The investigation has been transferred to the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Udyog Vihar.
This case highlights the vulnerability of small vendors and migrant workers to exploitation, while also demonstrating the Gurugram Police's commitment to addressing corruption within its ranks when presented with credible evidence.
The four accused have been identified as ASI Bijendra Kumar, Head Constable Rajbir, Constable Ajay Kumar, and SPO Anil. All will remain in judicial custody while investigations continue.
