The Gohana Public Health Engineering Department in Haryana is set to crack down on water wastage with a strict enforcement campaign beginning April 1, 2025. The initiative aims to prevent drinking water shortages during the upcoming summer months when demand typically spikes.
According to department officials, teams will conduct surprise inspections throughout Gohana and surrounding villages. Anyone found wasting drinking water will face an immediate fine of ₹5,000 without prior warning. If offenders refuse to pay the penalty, legal cases will be registered against them.
Outstanding Water Bills Exceed One Crore
The department has also revealed that water consumers in Gohana have accumulated outstanding bills totaling more than one crore rupees. As part of the campaign, officials will appeal to residents to clear their pending bills or face disconnection.
"We've formed teams of three employees each to cover the entire Gohana zone. These teams will not only monitor water wastage but also check for illegal connections," said Subhash Bhatti, In-charge of the Billing Branch of Gohana Public Health Engineering Department.
Severe Summer Predicted
Department officials expressed concern about weather forecasts predicting exceptionally high temperatures this summer. "We're likely to experience severe heat this year, which typically leads to drinking water shortages," Bhatti explained.
The department has identified water wastage and illegal connections as the main factors contributing to water scarcity during summer months. Through this campaign, employees will visit both urban and rural areas to raise awareness about water conservation.
Public Awareness Component
As part of the initiative, residents will be educated about simple water conservation practices, including:
- Turning off taps after use
- Avoiding discharge of drinking water into drains
- Proper maintenance of water connections
The campaign will also verify the legality of water and sewer connections. Residents with unauthorized connections will receive notices to regularize them. Failure to comply will result in further action against violators.
