Cancer cases in Haryana are rising steadily, with an average of 83 new patients being reported daily. Over the past year, the state has recorded 30,475 cancer patients, according to information shared in the Haryana Assembly.

The state government noted that these figures include patients from neighboring states seeking treatment in Haryana, while many Haryana residents travel to Delhi or other locations for cancer care. This means the actual number of cancer cases among state residents may differ from reported figures.

Assembly Discussion on Cancer Care

During Tuesday's budget session, Fatehabad MLA Balwan Singh Daulatpuria sought details about cancer patient numbers and treatment facilities in the state.

In response, Health Minister Aarti Rao provided comprehensive data, stating that 30,475 new cancer patients were reported in Haryana during 2024.

Institution-wise Distribution

The Health Minister broke down the numbers across various medical institutions:

  • PGIMS Rohtak: 3,636 patients
  • Bhagat Phool Singh Government Medical College: 171 patients
  • Hasan Khan Mewati Medical College: 88 patients
  • Kalpana Chawla Medical College, Karnal: 235 patients
  • Maharaja Agrasen Medical College, Agroha: 309 patients
  • ESIC Medical College, Faridabad: 962 patients
  • Atal Cancer Care Center, Ambala Cantt: 622 patients
  • Jhajjar Cancer Institute: 3,897 patients

Additionally, 1,340 cases were identified in district hospital laboratories and 7,638 in civil hospitals. Private institutions registered 8,814 cancer patients, while PGI Chandigarh and Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital in New Chandigarh reported 1,377 and 1,386 patients respectively.

Lack of Population-Based Registry

According to the Health Minister, in the absence of a population-based cancer registry, it's difficult to determine the exact number of cancer cases in the state.

Treatment Facilities

The minister's report indicated that 38 specialized cancer wards with 915 beds are operational across eight districts in Haryana.

The Atal Cancer Care Center in Ambala Cantt, established by the Haryana government, is treating patients from other states as well. Day care centers for cancer patients are functioning in Panchkula, Kurukshetra, Ambala, Yamunanagar, and Faridabad.

The budget includes a proposal to establish day care centers similar to the Ambala facility in 17 districts during the upcoming financial year. Work on this initiative is scheduled to begin from April 1.
