A horrific crime shook Hisar district of Haryana late Sunday night when a man burned his wife alive by pouring oil on her while she was lying on a cot. The accused didn't stop there - he also set his stepmother on fire, who sustained burns to nearly half her body and is currently hospitalized in critical condition.
What makes this crime even more disturbing is that after setting both women on fire, the accused didn't flee the scene. Instead, he closed the house door and sat inside, watching them burn. Local residents rushed to the scene after hearing the stepmother's cries for help and alerted the police. The accused have been arrested and the interrogation is going on to determine the intent behind the murder.
Preplanned Attack After Calling Wife Back Home
The incident occurred in Mahajat village of Hansi, Hisar. The accused has been identified as Ram Bhagat, father of two daughters. According to police, Ram Bhagat was addicted to drugs and had previously spent time in a rehabilitation center, had been living separately from his family in an old house in the same village.
On Sunday, his wife Bharpo Devi had brought him food and returned to the main family home. Later, Ram Bhagat called her back, asking her to return to his place. When she informed her mother-in-law Geeta Devi about this, the older woman decided to accompany her.
Police investigations reveal that Ram Bhagat had planned the attack in advance. As soon as both women entered his room and sat down, he doused them with oil and set them on fire. To prevent their escape, he had already locked the main gate. Despite their screams, no one heard them initially due to the late hour.
Stepmother's Escape
In a desperate attempt to save herself, Geeta Devi somehow managed to open the room door and reached outside using the stairs. By this time, she had suffered burns to more than half her body. Her screams finally alerted neighbors who came out to help, while Ram Bhagat continued to sit outside the locked gate after committing the crime.
History of Violence Fueled by Addiction
According to police, Ram Bhagat had a history of conflicts with his wife due to his drug addiction. This is why he lived separately, about a kilometer away from the family home. Whenever he visited his wife and caused trouble, family members would intervene to protect her.
Police revealed that about three years ago, Ram Bhagat had attacked Bharpo Devi with a sharp weapon, though she narrowly escaped that assault. Despite this, conflicts between them continued. Usually, a young man would bring food to Ram Bhagat, but on Sunday, Bharpo went herself.
DSP Siddharth Bishnoi of Hansi said that the investigation is ongoing. The accused husband has been arrested, and family members have been informed about the incident.
