The Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (PGI) in Rohtak has taken decisive action by setting up a special ward equipped with 15 regular beds and a 4-bed ICU unit for potential HMPV patients. The facility is fully equipped with 24-hour oxygen supply and ventilators. In a significant move to ensure accessibility, all HMPV tests will be conducted free of charge. Dr. Suresh Kumar, PGI Director, noted that while this virus was previously observed in 2005, there's no need for panic as mortality rates are relatively low.
Vulnerable Groups and Symptoms
Health officials have identified children and elderly as particularly vulnerable to HMPV infection. The virus primarily presents with symptoms similar to common respiratory infections, including cough, fever, and sore throat. Medical experts emphasize the importance of early testing for anyone experiencing these symptoms, especially among high-risk groups.
Comprehensive Response Strategy
PGI Vice-Chancellor Dr. HK Agarwal has implemented a multi-departmental approach to tackle potential cases. A dedicated flu clinic will soon be operational at the OPD ground floor, and Dr. Varun Arora has been appointed as the nodal officer for HMPV cases. The microbiology department will provide daily evening reports to ensure continuous monitoring of the situation.
State-wide Preparedness
Health Minister Aarti Rao has confirmed that while Haryana has not reported any cases yet, all civil surgeons across the state have been instructed to maintain operational oxygen plants and laboratories. The health department has issued directives for treating influenza, HMPV, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) cases, ensuring a state of complete readiness.
