The tragedy unfolded from a minor dispute between Gurmeet and a village resident named Rajpal. Despite reaching an initial settlement, Head Constable Abhimanyu allegedly began pressuring Gurmeet for a Rs 5000 bribe to suppress the complaint. Desperate to arrange the money, Gurmeet even offered to sell his mobile phone but faced intensified harassment when he couldn't pay the full amount.
Young Man Harrassed Physically
According to the family's four-page complaint to the Superintendent of Police (SP), Head Constable Abhimanyu, along with two others - Rajpal and Suresh, subjected Gurmeet to severe physical abuse at the police post on December 25. The young man was reportedly beaten with sticks and kept at the post from morning till evening and faced continuous threats of imprisonment.
On December 26, after facing relentless pressure and threats despite multiple requests for time to arrange the money, Gurmeet took the extreme step. He purchased poison from a nearby shop and consumed it outside the 8 Marla police post after a final confrontation with the head constable. He was found unconscious and half-clothed outside the police post by his brother Neeraj.
Family demands Justice
Following Gurmeet's death at Kalpana Chawla Medical College in Karnal on December 31, his family has refused to accept his body or proceed with the post-mortem until action is taken against the accused. The victim's grandfather, Maman Ram, submitted a detailed complaint to the SP, naming Head Constable Abhimanyu, Rajpal, and Suresh as the responsible parties for his grandson's death.
