Dalit Student Commits Suicide Over Unpaid Fees in Bhiwani

A 22-year-old Dalit student, Diksha, from Fartia Bhim village in Bhiwani district, died by suicide on December 24 after allegedly being barred from taking her fifth-semester examinations. The college authorities had reportedly denied her permission to appear for the exams due to unpaid fees amounting to Rs 35,000, along with current year's dues. 

Police Investigation Unfolds

The Bhiwani Police have registered a case against four individuals, including the college owner, his son and daughter, and the college principal. According to Loharu SHO Jitender Singh, the investigation began following a complaint filed by the victim's father on December 27.

Family's Account

Jagdish, the deceased student's father, stated that he had requested additional time from the college authorities to pay the outstanding fees. "I pleaded for more time to arrange the money, but my request was rejected," he said in his police complaint. The family performed the last rites on December 25, and the formal complaint against the college authorities was filed two days later.

College's Position

College owner Hanuman Singh has denied all allegations, terming them baseless. "We are fully prepared to cooperate with law enforcement authorities in their investigation," he stated. 

Political and Public Response

The incident has sparked a political controversy, with opposition leaders raising questions about educational accessibility. Congress MP Kumari Selja criticized the state government's 'Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao' campaign, questioning its effectiveness in protecting marginalized students' rights to education. Social organizations and family members have organized protests demanding justice for Diksha. The demonstrations highlight broader concerns about educational access for marginalized communities and the need for more flexible fee payment systems in private educational institutions.
