Officials Face Violent Resistance by Alleged Mining Mafia

Local residents join illegal miners in attacking officials with stones and sticks; concerns rise over continued illegal mining activities in Aravalli foothills as authorities struggle to enforce regulations.

Representational Image

During a routine enforcement operation at Hathan Gaon village in Punhana, a mining department team led by officer Shah Alam faced violent opposition while attempting to impound equipment used in illegal mining operations. The situation quickly escalated when local residents joined the confrontation, forcing officials to retreat.

Tactical Evasion and Counter-Attack

According to Jasvir Singh, SHO of Bichhore police station, miners initially attempted to evade detection by parking their JCB machine near a village house. When officials located and impounded the equipment, a group of over a dozen villagers, including women, emerged to confront the team, ultimately enabling the miners to reclaim their machinery.

Pattern of Resistance

Police investigations reveal a concerning pattern where illegal miners strategically use local women as shields against law enforcement. The FIR names 12 individuals, including female participants in the assault, indicating a coordinated effort to obstruct official mining enforcement activities.

Wider Regional Impact

The incident highlights broader concerns about illegal mining in the region:

  • Hathan Gaon is one of 20 vulnerable villages in the Aravalli foothills
  • A recent hill blast near the Rajasthan border resulted in an FIR against three Nuh residents
  • An SDM report suggests significant revenue loss of over Rs 2,000 crore to Haryana

Recent developments have revealed discrepancies in territorial claims. While the Mining Department initially claimed the blasted hill belonged to Rajasthan, an SDM investigation report indicates it falls within Haryana's jurisdiction, necessitating state-level intervention and enforcement action.
