The International Gita Mahotsav is expanding its global footprint with the United Republic of Tanzania joining as the partner country and Odisha as the partner state for 2024. Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini announced that this year's festival will create a unique confluence of spirituality, culture, and art. The event has grown significantly since its inception in 2016, with last year's celebration drawing 45-50 lakh visitors.
Rich Schedule of Events and Celebrations
The 18-day festival will feature daily Gita 'maha-aarti' at Brahma Sarovar. The official inauguration on December 5 will begin with a Gita 'yajna' and 'pujan', followed by a three-day International Gita Seminar at Kurukshetra University. A highlight will be the global recitation of the Gita by 18,000 students on Gita Jayanti (December 11) at Jyotisar Tirtha, alongside a grand Gita Shobha Yatra and Deepotsav at 182 pilgrimage sites.
Cultural Integration and Exhibition
The festival will showcase the diverse cultures of Tanzania and Odisha through a special Crafts and Saras Mela. Tanzanian High Commissioner Anisa Kapufi Mbega emphasized how this partnership demonstrates cultural unity across continents. Odisha's Minister Suryabanshi Suraj noted the symbolic connection between Haryana as the land of Gita and Odisha as the land of Lord Jagannath.
International Recognition and Growth
The mahotsav's international presence has grown significantly, with successful celebrations held in Mauritius, London, Canada, Australia, and Sri Lanka. Gita Manishi Swami Gyananand highlighted that this year marks 5,161 years since the Bhagavad Gita's revelation, showcasing its enduring relevance across generations and cultures.
