The National Capital Region is experiencing its worst air quality crisis in four years, with real-time Air Quality Index (AQI) readings fluctuating between 400 and 1,000 across various districts. The situation has become so severe that special monitoring teams have been deployed in major districts including Gurugram, Faridabad, Nuh, Rohtak, and Sonepat, among others.
Strict Actions Against Construction Activities
Authorities have taken decisive action against violators, particularly in the construction sector. In a significant move, 25 builders in Gurugram and Faridabad have received warning notices and orders to halt work immediately. In one notable case, power supply to the DLF Summit project in Sector 54, Gurugram, was disconnected after construction work was detected during nighttime hours.
Government Response and Monitoring
P Raghavendra Rao, Chairman of the Haryana Pollution Control Board, has confirmed the deployment of dedicated enforcement squads for implementing GRAP-4 (Graded Response Action Plan). The administration is particularly vigilant about nighttime construction activities, with around 800 complaints received from Gurugram and Faridabad districts alone in recent days.
Enforcement Measures
Local authorities, particularly in Gurugram, have adopted a zero-tolerance approach. District Commissioner Ajay Kumar has emphasized strict action against violators, with officials resorting to power supply disconnection as an immediate penalty for non-compliance. The focus remains on controlling vehicular emissions and unauthorized construction activities, identified as primary contributors to the current crisis.
The massive monitoring operation covers approximately 25,000 square kilometers across the affected districts, with special teams working round the clock to ensure compliance with Supreme Court directives.
