Haryana's Health Minister, Anil Vij, has reassured that the state has not reported any cases of the new Covid variant, JN-1. In response to the recent surge in COVID-19 cases in some states, Vij emphasised the importance of conducting RT-PCR testing for individuals exhibiting symptoms of influenza-like illness (ILI) and severe acute respiratory infection (SARI).

During a video conference with Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr Mansukh Mandaviya and counterparts from other states, Vij proposed making COVID-19 a notified disease. This would require private hospitals to inform the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) and government hospitals in case of any reported cases. The suggestion aims to enhance the monitoring and reporting of ILI and SARI cases, enabling early detection of emerging trends.

Vij highlighted the need for a proactive approach, stating that monitoring ILI and SARI cases would help identify any potential surge in such illnesses promptly. He reported that Haryana had conducted a mock drill and affirmed the state's readiness for any possible increase in COVID-19 cases. Currently, 238 Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) plants for oxygen are operational in Haryana, reinforcing the state's infrastructure for handling respiratory illnesses.

Emphasising the seriousness of the situation, Vij mentioned that the disease is presenting itself similarly to previous occurrences, warranting careful attention. Drawing on past experiences, the minister underscored that the state is on high alert and well-prepared to tackle any potential escalation in COVID-19 cases.
