In an unanticipated move, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi visited an 'akhara' in Jhajjar district, Haryana, against the backdrop of a controversy involving the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI). The visit took place early in the morning at the Virender Akhara in Chhara village, where Gandhi spent a couple of hours observing the daily routines of wrestlers, including Bajrang Punia.
During his impromptu visit, Gandhi actively engaged with the wrestlers, inquiring about their daily routines and participating in exercises alongside them. The wrestlers expressed their satisfaction, noting Gandhi's knowledge of wrestling and his willingness to familiarise himself with various techniques.
Gandhi's visit comes at a time when the WFI is embroiled in controversy, adding a political dimension to his interaction with the wrestling community. The senior Haryana Congress leader highlighted the spontaneity of Gandhi's visit, emphasising his genuine interest in connecting with people at the grassroots level.
While at the 'akhara,' Gandhi shared a meal with the wrestlers, partaking in traditional dishes such as milk, 'bajre ki roti' (pearl millet flatbread), and 'saag' (leafy green vegetable preparation). The wrestlers also offered him locally grown vegetables, which he graciously accepted.
This unplanned interaction not only showcased Gandhi's interest in understanding and appreciating diverse aspects of Indian culture but also provided a platform for him to engage with the wrestling community amidst the ongoing WFI controversy.
