Gurugram's Expensive Flooding Problem Gurugram, often called India's Millennium City, is facing a recurring nightmare. Every monsoon season, the city floods badly, causing chaos for its residents. What's shocking is that this happens even after the city has spent more than 100 crore rupees (1 billion rupees) in the last three years to prevent flooding.
Money Spent, Problem Unsolved
The huge amount of money was meant to stop the city from flooding. But it hasn't worked. Many different groups are responsible for fixing this problem, including:
1. The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA)
2. The Municipal Corporation
3. The Municipal Corporation of Manesar (MCM)
4. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI)
5. Private companies like DLF Despite their efforts and the money spent, they haven't been able to keep the city dry when it rains heavily.
Poor Planning and Lack of Action
City officials have held more than 50 meetings to plan how to stop flooding. They even did two practice runs to prepare. But when the real rains came, their plans didn't work.
One big reason for the flooding is that many drains in the city weren't cleaned before the rainy season. Some drains are blocked by buildings. In other cases, the work to clean drains wasn't finished because of delays or because workers left the job unfinished.
The NHAI, which is in charge of the big roads, didn't finish cleaning 60% of the areas it was supposed to clean. This made flooding worse on main roads and highways.
Criticism from All Sides
Many people are angry about this situation. Rao Narbeer, a former minister, said the city agencies are wasting people's money. He pointed out that Gurugram gives a lot of money to the state government but still doesn't have proper drains in many areas.= Praveen Malik, who leads a group of residents, said that even new parts of the city get flooded badly. He thinks the different agencies keep blaming each other instead of fixing the problem.
Some people also criticized the Chief Minister, Nayab Singh Saini, for not saying anything about the flooding when he visited the city during the rains.
Every year, about 70% of Gurugram gets affected by flooding. This is a big problem for a city that's supposed to be modern and well-planned. The situation shows that spending a lot of money isn't enough - the city needs better planning and teamwork to solve its flooding problem.
The heads of the city agencies admit there are problems. They say some areas don't have drains at all, while in other places, the drains aren't connected properly. It's clear that despite the huge amount of money spent, Gurugram still has a long way to go in solving its flooding issues.
