Shafali's Spectacular Smash: Haryana's Cricket Icon Rewrites Test History

In a breathtaking display of batting prowess, Haryana's cricket sensation Shafali Verma has etched her name in the annals of women's Test cricket. The 20-year-old opener smashed the fastest double century in the history of the women's game during India's one-off Test against South Africa on Friday. 

Verma's explosive innings of 205 came off just 197 balls, surpassing the previous record held by Australia's Annabel Sutherland, who had reached the milestone in 248 balls earlier this year. The young Indian's knock was a masterclass in aggressive batting, featuring 23 fours and eight sixes, showcasing her exceptional range-hitting abilities.

This record-breaking performance marks Verma's maiden international century across all formats, ending a five-year drought and silencing any doubters. Her father, Sanjeev Verma, expressed the family's joy, saying, "The entire family is happy. We congratulate her coach Ashwani Sharma on this success. She has ended a drought of five years." 

Verma's double ton is only the second by an Indian woman in Test cricket, coming almost 22 years after Mithali Raj's 214 against England in 2002. The significance of this achievement is not lost on the young star, who described it as a "precious treasure" and her "second favorite knock" after the U-19 T20 World Cup title win. 

The Haryana-born cricketer's aggressive approach was evident throughout her innings. She brought up her double century in style, hitting consecutive sixes off South African off-spinner Delmi Tucker before taking a single. Her partnership with fellow opener Smriti Mandhana, who herself scored an attacking 149 off 161 balls, laid a solid foundation for India's innings. 

Verma's fearless batting philosophy was clear in her post-match comments. "Whatever was in my range, I wanted to hit it," she said, crediting Mandhana for encouraging her to play her natural game. "Smriti always tells me to follow my instincts, especially when playing against the spinners," Verma added.
