Stuck Door Sparks Confusion
The day's events took an unexpected turn when Kumari Selja, the newly elected Congress MP from Sirsa, was addressing a press conference in Tohana. As media personnel closed the door to minimize outside noise, former Agriculture Minister Paramvir Singh arrived with his supporters, intending to join the conference. However, the door mysteriously got stuck, preventing Singh's entry despite repeated knocking.
Unaware of Singh's presence outside, Selja grew visibly upset by the commotion and paused the press conference. The situation escalated when Singh's supporters, frustrated by the blocked entrance, broke a glass pane on the door before finally forcing it open.
Factions on Display
Earlier in the day, during a workers' meeting organized by Selja to thank them for their efforts in her election campaign, supporters of Paramvir Singh raised slogans in his favor. Selja objected to this, emphasizing that the event was meant to express gratitude, not showcase individual strength.
The incident highlighted the existence of various factions within the Tohana Congress, including those loyal to Paramvir Singh, Nishan Singh, and unofficial Congress supporter Devender Babli. The presence of ambitious young party members further adds to the complex local political landscape.
Selja Calls for Unity
Despite the day's disruptions, Selja attempted to downplay tensions and promote unity. After the stuck-door incident, she urged Paramvir Singh not to take the matter seriously, stating that it appeared to be an accident rather than a deliberate act.
In her press conference, which resumed after Singh joined her, Selja addressed questions about chief ministerial aspirations within the Haryana Congress. She acknowledged that while there are often multiple contenders, the final decision rests with the party high command, who consider various factors before making their choice.
Gratitude Amidst Tension
Selja's visit to Tohana was primarily to thank workers for their support, which contributed to her significant lead of over 48,000 votes in the Tohana Assembly segment. This advantage played a crucial role in her overall victory by about 2.6 lakh votes over BJP candidate Ashok Tanwar.
The MP also made a point of visiting JJP MLA Devender Babli at his office to express appreciation for his backing during the elections, further emphasizing her commitment to acknowledging all who contributed to her success, regardless of party lines.
