The political landscape in Haryana has taken a dramatic turn as former Deputy Chief Minister and Jannayak Janata Party (JJP) leader Dushyant Chautala announced his party's willingness to support the Congress's move to oust the present Nayab Singh Saini government. Addressing a press conference in Hisar on Wednesday, Chautala called upon Chief Minister Saini to either resign on moral grounds or prove his majority in the legislative assembly.
Chautala's statement comes in the wake of three Independent MLAs withdrawing their support from the ruling coalition, effectively stripping the government of its majority in the House. The JJP leader emphasised that his party would issue a whip to its MLAs, instructing them to vote against the government if a trust vote is initiated.
"I don't need to go with the Congress or the BJP, but we will support the Opposition to ensure the fall of this government," Chautala asserted, making his intentions clear. He further stated that the JJP would write a letter to the Governor, urging him to direct the government to prove its majority on the floor of the House.
Referring to the JJP's absence during the previous trust vote after the formation of the Saini-led government, Chautala explained that his party had a rally scheduled on that day in Hisar. However, he stressed that this time, the JJP would issue a whip to its MLAs, effectively compelling them to vote against the government. "After issuing the whip, you can see that the five MLAs who were present in the Assembly at the time of the confidence motion by the Saini government had to leave the Assembly," Chautala said.
The former Deputy CM criticised Chief Minister Saini for accusing Independent MLAs of engaging in unethical dealings, challenging him to provide evidence to support his claims. Chautala also took a swipe at Saini, describing him as a "weak CM" and contrasting the current situation with the previous BJP-JJP coalition government led by Manohar Lal Khattar, which he claimed had not faced such turmoil.
Responding to questions about the possibility of initiating a no-confidence motion, Chautala clarified that the previous no-trust motion brought by the Congress was directed against the Khattar-led government, not the current administration. He urged the Leader of Opposition, Bhupinder Singh Hooda, to take the lead in initiating a move to topple the BJP government.
The ongoing political crisis in Haryana has heightened the uncertainty surrounding the stability of the Saini-led government. With the JJP throwing its weight behind the Opposition's efforts, the stage appears set for a high-stakes political battle in the state. As the situation unfolds, all eyes will be on the Governor's response and the potential rearrangement or fresh elections that may emerge from this turmoil.
