Assault on Students
A shocking incident took place on the night of April 9, 2024, at the Central University of Haryana in Mahendragarh. A group of outsiders and anti-social elements entered the campus and attacked several students. During the incident, the students managed to catch one of the attackers, but neither the security guard nor the hostel warden intervened to stop the violence.
Peaceful Protest Turns Ugly
The next day, when the students peacefully protested against this attack on their safety, they faced more trouble. Some students from the law department blocked the gate and started pushing the protesters, even manhandling the female students. The protesting students were then threatened and forcefully removed from the block.
ABVP's demand for Justice
Trupti Saini, a national executive member of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the largest student organisation in the world, condemned the incident. She said that a female student was kicked in the stomach, and when another student tried to intervene, her hair was pulled, and she was beaten up. Saini expressed disappointment that some faculty members from the same department were instead supporting the students.
Rakshit Sharma, the Central University unit president of ABVP, said that such incidents are not new to the university campus, and the frequency of such events is increasing due to the weak and deteriorating security system of the university. He urged the university administration to take strict action against the culprits and ensure the safety of the students, as their trust in the administration is decreasing.
Demand for Decisive Action
ABVP has demanded that the university administration take immediate action against the individuals involved in the incident, including the errant faculty members. The organisation has also initiated a signature campaign, and if the administration fails to take decisive action, ABVP will be forced to launch a large-scale protest, the responsibility of which will lie solely with the university administration.
Saini emphasised that an FIR has been filed in the matter, but the perpetrators are still roaming freely within the university premises. The peaceful protesters are also being threatened continuously, and if any harm comes to them, the administration will be held accountable.
The Central University of Haryana must pay attention to the demands of the student community and ensure that such incidents do not occur in the future. The safety and security of the students should be the top priority, and the administration must take strict actions to restore the trust of the student body.
