After a late-night meeting following the fourth round of talks, Union Minister Piyush Goyal proposed MSP guarantees for crops beyond rice and wheat. However, farmers refused to agree to a five-year contract for five crops, leading to uncertainty over the government's next steps.

Stalemate Continues as Farmers Reject Contract Proposal

Prior to Sunday's meeting, Minister Goyal presented a proposal for MSP guarantees on rice, wheat, and five other crops, requiring farmers to enter into a five-year agreement with NAFED and CCI. Farmers' leader Dallewal stated they wouldn't engage in any contractual process for MSP legal guarantee. Talks continued, but consensus on the five-crop contract proposal remained elusive.

Farmers Gear Up for Delhi March Amidst Internet Shutdowns

With negotiations stalling, farmers prepare for a march to Delhi on February 21. The 8th day of the ongoing agitation witnesses increased tensions as internet shutdowns in district towns create difficulties for locals. The Haryana government extends internet shutdowns until February 20 midnight, exacerbating the situation.

Increasing Discontent and Preparations for Delhi March

Senior farmer leader Lakhwinder Singh voiced distrust in the government's intentions, indicating a lack of sincerity in meeting farmers' demands. Despite heightened security measures at borders, farmers remain steadfast in their preparations for the Delhi march, indicating their readiness to escalate if their demands aren't met.

Logistical Challenges and Community Support for Farmers

As the number of protesting farmers grows at the Datta Singh Wala border, logistical challenges increase. Women, accompanied by children, join the protests, highlighting the widespread community support. Continuous langar (community kitchen) services symbolise the solidarity among protesters, who remain resolute in their demands for MSP legal guarantees.

Government's MSP Proposal Faces Criticism and Scepticism

Farmers' leaders criticise the government's MSP proposal, citing its impracticality for farmers cultivating diverse crops across different states. They argue that the proposal overlooks the realities of crop cultivation outside traditional rice and wheat belts. The government's approach, they assert, only serves to complicate rather than address farmers' concerns.

In conclusion, as the impasse between farmers and the government persists, the prospects for resolution remain uncertain. With the Delhi march scheduled for February 21 and farmers' steadfast determination, the pressure on the government to address their demands intensifies. The rejection of the MSP contract proposal underscores the deep-rooted scepticism among farmers, highlighting the need for meaningful dialogue and concrete solutions to alleviate their grievances.
