Haryana boxers make history in Kazakhstan; Sakshi becomes first Indian woman to win gold at World Cup

In a historic moment for Indian boxing, Haryana 's boxing stars Sakshi Dhanda and Jaismine Lamboria clinched gold medals at the World Boxing Cup 2025, held in Astana, Kazakhstan, marking a major breakthrough for Indian women in the sport.

Sakshi Dhanda, a 54kg category boxer and Army Havildar hailing from Dhanana village in Haryana's Bhiwani district, created history as she became the first Indian woman to win gold at the prestigious tournament. She defeated USA’s Yoseline Perez with a dominant 5-0 unanimous decision in the final, showcasing her superior technique and resilience throughout the match. 

Sakshi's victory is a remarkable achievement for Indian women's boxing. Sakshi hails from a rich boxing region of Bhiwani and her triumph is a proud moment for India as well as Haryana.

Adding to India’s medal tally, Jaismine Lamboria grabbed another gold by defeating Brazil’s Jucielen Cerqueira Romeu in the women’s 57kg final. The 23-year-old, who comes from a legendary boxing family and is the great-granddaughter of Asian Games gold medalist Hawa Singh, lived up to expectations with a strong performance. Jaismine had earlier won bronze at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and competed in the 2024 Paris Olympics.  

Their twin victories highlight the growing dominance of Indian women boxers on the international stage and reflect Haryana’s continued legacy as the cradle of Indian boxing.
