
The Punjab and Haryana High Court has issued a notice to the Haryana government and other respondents, directing them to file a response to a public interest litigation that highlights the alarming rate of cancer cases in the state.
The petition filed in the Punjab & Haryana High Court reveals that 59,912 cancer cases were registered in Haryana in the past two years, while government health institutions have only 915 beds available for patients.
Advocate Ranjan Lakhanpal, who filed the petition, informed the High Court that 29,437 cancer patients were reported in 2023, and this number increased to 30,475 in 2024.

- Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital (Sangrur and New Chandigarh).
During 2023 and 2024, the highest number of cancer cases (18,988) were reported from private institutions, followed by district hospitals (15,601), National Cancer Institute, Jhajjar (7,778), and PGI Rohtak (7,540). According to medical certification, 5,071 cancer-related deaths were recorded in the state between 2021 and 2023.
Free cancer care services, including OPD, chemotherapy, and surgery, are provided to needy patients at district civil hospitals in Faridabad, Panchkula, Kurukshetra, and Yamunanagar. Cancer treatment is available at PGI Rohtak, GMC (Sonipat), GMC (Nuh), GMC (Karnal), Maharaja Agrasen Medical College (Hisar), and National Cancer Institute (Jhajjar). The petitioner has appealed for an increase in the number of beds for cancer patients in government hospitals.
The court has requested a response from the state government regarding the measures being taken to address this serious public health concern.
