Authorities at Pt BD Sharma University of Health Sciences, Rohtak (UHSR) have made progress in addressing their medical staff shortage by hiring 103 senior resident doctors and tutors at PGIMS Rohtak. However, the institution still faces significant vacancies with 148 positions remaining unfilled.
The university is now preparing to re-advertise these vacant positions to complete the recruitment process as quickly as possible.
"In February, the UHSR advertised 251 vacant positions for senior resident doctors or tutors on a tenure basis across 46 specialties at PGIMS. After a rigorous document scrutiny, 272 candidates were found provisionally eligible and were invited for interviews held on March 24, 27, and 28," sources familiar with the process revealed.
Following the interviews, 103 candidates were selected, with results uploaded to the university website immediately after the final interview day. The administration issued appointment letters promptly to help alleviate the doctor shortage.
Key Roles Remain Unfilled
Senior resident doctors, who must hold postgraduate degrees in medical specialties, play crucial roles in patient care, teaching, and research at the medical college. Their responsibilities include providing clinical care, supervising junior residents, participating in daily patient rounds, and handling administrative tasks like record-keeping.
Similarly, tutor positions require candidates with Master of Science (MSc) degrees in medical specialties, with primary focus on teaching and research activities.
Location Factor Affects Recruitment
When asked about the difficulties in filling all positions, Dr. HK Aggarwal, Vice-Chancellor of UHSR, explained: "Many candidates who have completed their postgraduate studies in Haryana prefer working in medical colleges in Delhi or their home states."
The VC emphasized the university's commitment to addressing the staffing issue. "We are committed to filling all vacant posts to provide better healthcare facilities to patients in the PGIMS. The remaining vacancies would be re-advertised soon so as to fill these posts at the earliest."
Dr. Aggarwal added that while senior resident doctors are initially appointed for one year, their tenure can be extended annually for up to three years. With many medical postgraduate courses set to conclude soon, the university remains hopeful that the upcoming recruitment round will help fill the remaining vacancies.
