Union Minister sets precedent by giving away ancestral home and all personal assets.

Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar

Union Minister for Energy and Urban Development Manohar Lal Khattar has donated his entire ancestral property to the Prime Minister's Relief Fund, setting what many consider an unprecedented example among Indian politicians since independence.

Khattar owned approximately 12 kanal of land in Baniyana village in Rohtak district, valued at around Rs 35 lakh. He had previously donated his ancestral house in the same village to establish a public library.

According to his election affidavit, Khattar had fixed deposits worth Rs 1.30 crore in the State Bank of India, along with Rs 1,554 in Punjab National Bank and Rs 25,000 in another State Bank of India account. He has now donated all these assets to the Prime Minister's Relief Fund.

Post-Partition Life

After Partition, Khattar's family migrated from Pakistan and initially settled in Nidana village in Rohtak district. Later, they were allotted some land in Baniyana village. His father, Harbans Lal, opened a small shop in the village and began farming.

Khattar, who devoted his entire life to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), never married. He inherited around 12 kanal of land in the village as his share of the family property.

Simple Lifestyle

Throughout his public life, Khattar has lived without a house of his own. He believes the entire state is his family, and his life is completely dedicated to national interest. He maintains a simple lifestyle.

After graduating from Delhi University in 1975, he devoted himself completely to the RSS. From 1977 to 1994, he worked in various positions within the organization for 17 consecutive years.

In 1994, he was appointed as BJP's organization secretary and often stayed at the BJP office in Rohtak. He always eats simple food and even after becoming Chief Minister, he continued to make his own tea and food in the Chief Minister's residence kitchen for quite some time, though this habit gradually faded as his responsibilities increased.

A message going viral on social media notes, "Former Haryana Chief Minister and current Union Cabinet Minister Manohar Lal has made history after independence by donating his entire property to the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund and his private residence for a public library."
