In a sweeping demonstration of political dominance, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured a landslide victory in the Haryana municipal elections held on Wednesday, March 12, 2025. The results showed the party continuing its winning streak in the state, capturing 9 out of 10 mayoral seats and numerous municipal council positions across the state.
The elections, coming just over five months after BJP secured its third consecutive term in the state assembly, have further consolidated the party's grip on Haryana's political landscape. BJP state chief Mohan Lal Badoli celebrated the results, stating that the party's vision of establishing a "triple-engine government" in Haryana has now been realized.
Major Blow to Congress in Traditional Strongholds
One of the most significant outcomes of these elections was BJP's victory in Rohtak, long considered a stronghold of former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda. BJP candidate Ramavtar Balmiki defeated Congress's Suraj Mal Kiloi by a substantial margin of over 45,000 votes.
In Panipat, BJP candidate Komal Saini secured a commanding win against Congress's Savita Garg, with a margin exceeding 1,23,170 votes. The party's dominance in Panipat was further highlighted as BJP candidates won 23 out of 26 wards, with the remaining three going to independents, while Congress failed to secure even a single ward.
Similarly impressive victories came in Gurugram, where BJP's Raj Rani Malhotra defeated Congress candidate Seema Pahuja by 1,79,485 votes, and in Hisar, where Praveen Popli of BJP won by a margin of 64,456 votes against Congress's Krishan Singla.
The Lone Exception: Manesar
The only municipality where BJP couldn't secure victory was Manesar, which elected its first mayor in Dr. Inderjeet Yadav, an independent candidate who won by approximately 2,000 votes. Political analysts note that Yadav is known to have close ties with Union Minister Rao Inderjit Singh.

Ward-Level Dominance
Beyond the mayoral positions, BJP demonstrated remarkable strength at the ward level. In Hisar Municipal Corporation, the party secured 17 out of 20 wards, with Congress managing to win just one ward. Independent candidates claimed the remaining two seats.
In Sonepat, BJP's Rajiv Jain won the mayoral by-election by defeating Congress candidate Kamal Diwan with a margin of 34,749 votes. Similarly, in Ambala, Shalaija Sachdeva of BJP emerged victorious against Congress's Amisha Chawla.
What This Means for Haryana's Political Landscape
Political observers suggest that these results indicate a significant shift in Haryana's political dynamics. With control over the state government, representation in the central government, and now dominance in local bodies, BJP has established what party leaders describe as a "triple-engine government" that could significantly impact governance and development initiatives in the state.
The Congress party, which had hoped to make inroads by capitalizing on anti-incumbency sentiment, now faces the challenging task of rebuilding its base in areas that were once considered its strongholds.
