Rekha Gupta Set to Become Delhi's New Chief Minister, First BJP CM in 27 Years

BJP's Shalimar Bagh MLA to take oath at Ramlila Maidan on 20 February alongside likely Deputy CM Parvesh Verma, marking party's return to power after defeating AAP in recent assembly polls.

The first time MLA Rekha Gupta has been named as Delhi’s next Chief Minister marking her the only women Chief Minister in any BJP ruled state. BJP made this announcement after the BJP’s legislature party meeting on Wednesdayn following the party's victory in Delhi assembly polls where they secured 48 out of 70 seats in Delhi assembly elections.

BJP’s victory marks the end of the AAP's 10 years rule in Delhi. The result of the 2025 Delhi assembly elections showed shift in voter's preference with AAP managing to win only 22 seats out of 70. The note worthy the defeat was of Delhi‘s former Chief Minister, Arvind Kejriwal by Parvesh Sahib Singh in New Delhi constituency which earned Parvesh the title of "giant killer". 

The swearing in ceremony is scheduled for 20th February at the Ramlila Maidan in Delhi, which can accommodate 30,000 people. Prominent BJP leaders including Chief Ministers from BJP ruled states and various celebrities are expected to join the swearing in ceremony. The preparations for the grand ceremony are already underway as the venue was freshly painted and renovated.

BJP government has outlined an ambitious agenda for Delhi’s development which will include welfare schemes for women, senior citizens and the poor of the society. Major promises include ₹2500 monthly assistance for women from poor families, LPG cylinders at ₹500 and implementation of Ayushmann Bharat Yojana, which will provide health coverage up to ₹10 Lakh per family.
