Special Judge Kaveri Baweja has found 79-year-old Sajjan Kumar guilty of murder in the Saraswati Vihar case. The court will decide on his sentence on February 18. This case is related to the 1984 killings of Jaswant Singh and his son Tarundeep Singh, which happened after Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's assassination.

Background of the Case

Initially, the investigation was registered at Punjabi Bagh Police Station and later transfered to a special investigation team. The investigation revealed that an armed mob led violent attacks on Sikh properties in Delhi during the Anti-Sikh riots in 1984. The prosecution presented evidence in the court stating that Sjjan Kumar participated and led the mob to attack the victims's house resulting in murders and looting their house.

Previous Conviction and Imprisonment

Sajjan Kumar is already serving life imprisonment since December 31, 2018 for his role in another Anti-Sikh riots case in Palam colony and raj nagar. Gurudwara was burned down and five Sikhs were killed during that incident. The supremen court has denied him bail a number of times.

Historical Context

The 1984 anti-Sikh riots were a devastating response to Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's assassination by her Sikh bodyguards on October 31, 1984. This tragic event led to widespread violence, resulting in approximately 3,000 deaths, mainly from the Sikh community, across Delhi and other parts of India. The riots remain a painful reminder of India's communal violence, with many cases still being prosecuted decades later.
