The Haryana government has declared February 5 as a paid holiday in order to strengthen democratic participation in the Delhi assembly elections. The decision is rooted in the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881 and the Representation of People Act 1951 as amended in 1996 and showcases the state's commitment to electoral participation.
The declaration of the holiday extends to government offices as well as educational institution, boards, corporations, factories, shops and private establishments in Haryana. The decision ensures that every Delhi registered voter working in Haryana, regardless of their employment sector can exercise their fundamental right to vote without any kind of professional constraint.
Currently, Delhi is preparing for elections to its 70 member assembly and the voting is scheduled for February 5 followed by counting on February 8. The paid holiday provision known as "savetan avakash" in official terms guarantees that employee can participate in the electoral process without facing any financial loss which is one of the common barrier to votes participation.
The step of the Haryana government reflects the understanding of the importance of electoral participation in democratic system where every vote counts and every voter should have the opportunity to cast their ballot without any constraint.
